Rogan art is mainly the art of textile painting. Rogan means "oil-based" in Persian, and hence it is said that the art originated in Persia. This form of art is about 300 years old. The process starts with boiling castor oil in the jungle (to keep away the foul smell) and making a thick jelly-like paste. Mineral colours are mixed with the jelly to make the paint which is used on different types of cloth. Here in Nirona, the 8th generation of the Khatri family is the only family practicing the art in the entire country. This art which was primarily a folk practice has been converted to an exquisite art form. Gafoor Bhai Khatri has won a National Award in excelling in this art form.
